  • Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (trade names include Choragon, Choriomon, Chorulon, Gonacor, Fergonad-C, Gonasi HP, Hucog, IVF-C, Novarel, Ovidac, Pregnyl, Pubergen, Zy-HCG) is a chemical for the maternal recognition of pregnancy created by trophoblast tissue. HCG helps thicken a person's uterine lining to support a growing embryo and tells the body to stop menstruation. It is naturally produced by the female placenta during a normal pregnancy. This medicine is used as a tumor marker for some cancers including choriocarcinoma, seminoma, testicular cancer, hydatidiform mole, islet cell tumor, teratoma with elements of choriocarcinoma, other germ cell tumors. HCG injection is also indicated in women as fertility drug for the treatment of infertility for final maturation induction in lieu of luteinizing hormone (LH, the pituitary analog of hCG, is produced in the pituitary gland of males and females). This medication in men is prescribed for hypogonadism, fertility treatment, and for other medical purposes. Human chorionic gonadotropin is also extensively used as an anabolic steroid adjunct, and for weight control as an adjunct to an ultra-low-calorie weight-loss diet (HCG diet), in veterinary medicine.
