  • Atorvastatin (trade names include Lipitor, Apo-Atorvastatin, Atchol, Atocor, Atorec, Atorgamma, Atoris, Atorlip, Atorvaliq, Atorvastatin Actavis, Atorvastatin Sandoz, Atorvastatin Teva, Atorvastatina Cinfa, Atorvastatine Biogaran, Atorvox, Aztor, Cardyl, Jovastatin, Lipicure, Liponorm, Liprimar, Lipvas, Mactor, Mylan-Atorvastatin, Prevencor, Rotacor, Sortis, Stator, Storvas, Tahor, Tonact, Torvacard, Torvalipin, Torvast, Totalip, Vasolip, Zarator) is a statin medication for cardiovascular system from HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors pharmacological group. This medicine is used for the treatment of dyslipidemia and hyperlipidemia (including hyperlipoproteinemia, hypercholesterolemia, heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, hypertriglyceridemia, primary dysbetalipoproteinemia, combined hyperlipidemia, mixed dyslipidemia), to lower the amount of high cholesterol, bad cholesterol (LDL) and triglycerides (lipids, fats) in the blood. It also helps to prevent cardiovascular diseases and other medical problems caused by cholesterol, such as atherosclerosis. Atorvastatin reduces the risk of heart attack, myocardial infarction, stroke, major coronary events, ischaemic heart disease, unstable angina, acute coronary syndrome, thrombotic stroke, coronary artery disease, revascularization in people with established coronary heart disease, or other health problems in patients with risk factors for heart or blood vessel disease (age, high blood pressure, smoking, low HDL-C, a family history of early heart disease); to precent myocardial infarction and stroke prophylaxis in patients with type 2 diabetes. Lipitor is prescribed as a risk factor intervention in patients at significantly increased risk for atherosclerotic vascular disease due to hypercholesterolemia. This drug works by slowing the production of cholesterol in the body. The therapy with Atorvastatin should be combined with a low-cholesterol and low-fat diet and some lifestyle changes.
