Ursodiol (USAN), also known as Ursodeoxycholic Acid (INN, BAN, AAN) - trade names include Actigall, Ursofalk, Urso, Actibile, Analiv, Delursan, Destolit, Deursil, Lofibra, Proursan, Sorbidiol, UDCA, Udihep, Udiliv, Urdafalk, Ursetor, Ursilon, Urso Forte, Ursobilane, Ursocam, Ursocholic, Udihep Forte, Ursocol, Ursoflor, Ursolvan, Ursomax, Ursosan, Urzac - is a medication for bile and liver therapy from bile acid preparations pharmacological group. This medicine is used to treat gallstones and to prevent gallstones formation. Ursodiol is also prescribed for the treatment of primary biliary cirrhosis (primary biliary cholangitis, PBC), gallbladder disease, biliary stasis, biliary dyskinesia, biliary sludge, biliary atresia, cholesterol gallstones, cystic fibrosis, certain liver diseases (such as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, liver bile duct-paucity syndromes, primary sclerosing cholangitis, bile reflux gastritis, to reduce elevated liver enzyme levels), to reduce the cholesterol saturation of bile and leads, to relieve itching in intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy, to decrease infant mortality rate, to decrease bile absorption, after bariatric surgery, to prevent cholelithiasis, in research studies for the therapy of Alzheimer's disease. It works by reducing cholesterol absorption and is used to dissolve cholesterol gallstones in patients who want an alternative to surgery.
