This medicine is used to treat dyslipidemia, hyperlipoproteinemia, to lower the amount of bad cholesterol (LDL) and triglycerides in the blood. It also helps to prevent medical problems and cardiovascular diseases caused by cholesterol, such as atherosclerosis. Simvastatin reduces the risk of heart attack, myocardial infarction, stroke, or other health problems in patients with risk factors for heart or blood vessel disease. Zocor is prescribed as a risk factor intervention in patients at significantly increased risk for atherosclerotic vascular disease due to hypercholesterolemia. The therapy with this drug should be combined with a low-cholesterol and low-fat diet and some lifestyle changes.
