Misoprostol (trade names include Cytotec, Apo-Misoprostol, Cytolog, Misoprost, Gymiso, Misotrol) is a medication from prostaglandin E1 (PGE1) analogues pharmacological group. This medicine is prescribed to prevent development of stomach ulcers, which may sometimes be caused by arthritis medications that are called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). It works by reducing the amount of acid released by the stomach and protecting the stomach lining, which helps to reduce the risk of stomach ulcers. Misoprostol is indicated to treat acute ulcers in the stomach (gastric ulcers), or in the first part of the small intestine (duodenal ulcers) and to prevent bleeding in the stomach or upper intestine in hospital patients after surgery.
Cytotec (Misoprostol) is also commonly used for labor induction (the process or treatment that stimulates childbirth and delivery), myomectomy, medical abortions (as an alternative to surgical abortion), early pregnancy loss, postpartum bleeding (postpartum hemorrhage, PPH), cervical ripening, trigeminal neuralgia, insertion of intrauterine contraceptive device. Medical abortion (induction of labour) has the advantage of being cheaper, simpler, less invasive, not requiring anesthesia, and not having the risk of scarring and adhesions associated with surgical abortion. Thats why misoprostol is also called as "abortion pills".
