Cefixime (trade names include Suprax, Cefim, Cefix, Cefixdura, Cefixime Mylan, Cefixoral, Cefspan, Cephoral, Mahacef, Milixim, Secef, Sporetik, Suprax-DT, Taxim-O, Tergecef, Tricef, Zimaks, Ziprax) is a cephalosporin antibiotic from third-generation cephalosporins pharmacological group. This medication is used for treating infections caused by certain bacteria such as infections of ears, nose, chest and lungs, pelvis, throat, respiratory tract, urinary tract, skin and soft tissue infections, for prophylaxis of sexually transmitted infections. Indications include strep throat, tonsillitis, pharyngitis, otitis media, sinusitis, bronchitis, pneumonia, bladder infections, kidney infections, gonorrhea, typhoid fever, Lyme disease. Cefixime has broad spectrum of activity against many kinds of bacterial infections such as caused by Escherichia coli, Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Proteus mirabilis, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus pyogenes. It works by inhibiting cell wall synthesis and killing sensitive bacteria.
