Modafinil (trade names include Alertec, Modalert, Modapro, Modafinil Mylan, Modasomil, Modiodal, Modvigil, Provigil, Teva-Modafinil, Vigia, Vilafinil) is a psychostimulant drug, wakefulness-promoting agent from centrally acting sympathomimetics pharmacological group. This medicine is indicated for improving wakefulness, to treat excessive sleepiness caused by obstructive sleep apnea, narcolepsy, shift work sleep disorder; for the treatment of neurological fatigue, sedation and fatigue in many conditions, including fibromyalgia, depression, chronic fatigue syndrome, opioid-induced sleepiness, myotonic dystrophy, spastic cerebral palsy, Parkinson's disease; to improve excessive daytime somnolence and fatigue in primary biliary cirrhosis; as an appetite suppressant for weight loss effect; and for other medical disorders. It is also widely used as a nootropic, "smart drug", doping, cognition-enhancing agent (including by astronauts, athletes, militaries, students, office workers) as an alternative to amphetamine. Modafinil is in research studies for the therapy of major depressive disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), substance dependence, schizophrenia, post-anesthesia sedation, bipolar depression in people with bipolar disorder, for cognitive enhancement. This medication works by altering the natural chemicals (neurotransmitters) in the brain.
