This medication is indicated for the treatment of viral infections like herpes labialis (cold sores), herpes zoster (shingles), genital herpes simplex virus (HSV), neonatal HSV, mucocutaneous HSV, herpes simplex in immunocompetent patients, encephalitis caused by HSV, herpes simplex blepharitis, herpes of the eye, systemic or traumatic herpes infections, eczema herpeticum, herpes simplex meningitis, mononucleosis, infectious mononucleosis, Ramsay-Hunt syndrome, varicella-zoster (chickenpox). It is also used to prevent herpes outbreaks, cytomegalovirus infections, severe complications of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection; for prevention of herpes viruses in immunocompromised people; for the reduction of the duration and severity of acute symptoms and rash; all zoster-associated pain; the incidence and duration of post-herpetic neuralgia; to slow HIV disease progression in people not taking anti-retroviral therapy (ART). Acyclovir works by reducing the replication of viruses and helping speed up the healing process.
