  • Roxithromycin (trade names include Rulide, Rulid, Apo-Roxithromycin, Raxitid, Rolicyn, Rossitrol, Rothricin, Roxi Aristo, Roxid, Roxidura, Roximycin, Roxithro-Lich, Roxithromycin Heumann, Roxithromycin Ratiopharm, Roxithromycin Sandoz, Roxo, Roxy, Surlid) is a semi-synthetic macrolide antibiotic from antibacterials for systemic use pharmacological group. This medication is prescribed for the treatment of bacterial infections of upper and lower respiratory tract (such as ear, nose and throat infections), genito-urinary tract, skin and soft tissue infections. The indications include otitis media, acute pharyngitis, nasopharyngitis, sinusitis, tonsillitis, rhinitis, laryngitis, tracheitis, laryngotracheitis, acute bronchitis, whooping cough, pneumonia, diphtheria, gingivitis, stomatitis, rheumatic fever, non-gonoccocal urethritis, infections associated with stomach and intestinal ulcers, gastritis, duodenitis, nephritis, some types of sexually transmitted diseases, cystitis, urethral syndrome, inflammatory diseases of prostate, salpingitis, oophoritis, cervicitis, impetigo (bacterial infection causing sores on the skin), acne vulgaris; to prevent spotted fever. It works by preventing bacterial growth by interfering with their protein synthesis. As Erythromycin derivative roxithromycin has similar antimicrobial spectrum, but it is more effective against certain gram-negative bacteria.
