Tetracycline (trade names include Sumycin, Achromycin, Actisite, Dumocycline, Hostacycline, Oricyclin, Resteclin, Tetracyclin Actavis, Tetrex) is a broad spectrum antibiotic from tetracyclines pharmacological group for systemic, topical, ophthalmological and otological use. This medication is prescribed for the treatment of many kinds of bacterial and rickettsial infections, such as skin, bone, respiratory tract, eye, ear, bladder, urinary tract, certain types of sexually-transmitted infections and diseases. It is indicated to treat acne vulgaris, rosacea, ocular rosacea, pemphigus, pemphigoid, bullous pemphigoid, cholera, brucellosis, plague, anthrax, certain eukaryotic parasites, amoebic dysentery, malaria, balantidiasis, ornithosis, psittacosis, sexually transmitted epididymitis, pelvic inflammatory disease, pneumonia, bronchitis, nongonococcal urethritis, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, Q fever, ehrlichiosis, Lyme disease, arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, carditis, erythema chronicum migrans, lymphogranuloma venereum, peptic ulcers (combined therapy), infections caused by Mycoplasma pneumoniae, chlamydia infection, gonococcal infection, Helicobacter pylori infection, neurological infections; early, latent, tertiary syphilis; to eradicate nasal carriage of meningococci; as a marker of bone growth for biopsies in humans; as a biomarker in wildlife; as a selective agent in cell culture systems; in genetic engineering for transcriptional activation; in cancer research; in veterinary medicine; and for other medical purposes. Tetracycline works by inhibiting protein synthesis in bacteria cells. It stops bacterial growth and reproduction.
