This medicine is indicated for the treatment of susceptible anaerobic bacterial and protozoal infections like respiratory tract, reproductive system, vaginal diseases, gastrointestinal tract, intraabdominal, skin and soft tissue, bone, joint infections. Flagyl is effective for the therapy of pelvic inflammatory disease, endocarditis, bacterial vaginosis (bacterial vaginitis), bacteremia, dracunculiasis (dracunculus), giardiasis, trichomoniasis, dientamoeba fragilis, diverticulitis, meningitis, nongonococcal urethritis, peritonitis, pouchitis, pseudomembranous colitis, amebiasis, pneumonia, aspiration pneumonia, lung abscess, Crohn's disease, Lemierre's syndrome, deep neck infections, periodontal disease, dental abscess, tooth infections, perioral dermatitis, rosacea, fungating wounds, Clostridium difficile colitis, liver abscesses, pleuropulmonary infections, brain abscesses, other infections caused by Bacteroides, Balantidium coli, Clostridium, Dracunculus medinensis, Entamoeba histolytica, Fusobacterium, Helicobacter Pylori, Peptostreptococcus, Prevotella, Trichomonas vaginalis; in women to prevent preterm birth associated with risk factors such as bacterial vaginosis; for surgical prophylaxis, prophylaxis of sexually transmissible diseases; as hypoxic radiosensitizer against hypoxic tumors. Metronidazole is also widely used in veterinary to treat some infections of dogs, cats, fish, other companion pets and animals. It works by entering the bacterial cell, acting on some components of the cell, and destroying the bacteria.
