Itraconazole (trade names include Sporanox, Adco-Sporozole, Canditral, Itracon, Itraconazol Sandoz, Orungal, Sempera 7, Sporal, Sporanox Pulse, Tolsura, Trisporal) is an antifungal medication from triazole derivatives pharmacological group for systemic use. This medicine is used to treat and prevent infections caused by fungus on the nails and in the body. It is often prescribed for the treatment of fungus infections in the mouth, throat, lungs, nails and other parts of a body, including aspergillosis, blastomycosis, candida urinary tract infection, candidemia, candidiasis, coccidioidomycosis, cryptococcosis, cryptococcal and coccidioidal meningitis, dermatophytosis, febrile neutropenia, histoplasmosis, microsporidiosis, oral thrush, paracoccidioidomycosis, sporotrichosis, Tinea capitis, Tinea unguium, Tinea versicolor, vaginal yeast infection, onychomycosis of the toenail and fingernail. Itraconazole has been also explored as an anticancer drug for patients with prostate cancer, basal cell carcinoma, non-small cell lung cancer. As the other azole antifungals Sporanox works by inhibiting the fungal-mediated synthesis of ergosterol and preventing the fungus from growing.
