Oxytetracycline (trade names include Terramycin, Alamycin, Bio-Mycin, Liquamycin LA, Oxymycin, Oxytet, Oxytetra, Oxytetral, Terrados, Terramicina, Tetroxy) is an antibiotic for systemic, topical, stomatological, gynecological, ophthalmological use from tetracyclines pharmacological group. This medicine is indicated for the treatment of certain bacterial infections caused by susceptible strains of Actinomyces species, Bacillus anthracis, Bacteroides species, Bartonella bacilliformis, Borrelia recurrentis, Brucella species, Chlamydia, Clostridium species, Diplococcus pneumoniae, Enterobacter aerogenes, Escherichia coli, Fusobacterium fusiforme, Haemophilus ducreyi, Haemophilus influenzae, Herellea species, Klebsiella species, Koch-Weeks bacillus, Listeria monocytogenes, Mima species, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Pasteurella pestis, Pasteurella tularensis, Pneumococci, Propionibacterium acnes, Proteus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Shigella species, Staphylococci, Streptococci, Treponema pallidum, Treponema pertenue, Vibrio comma, Vibrio fetus, and other microorganisms. It is an often prescribed broad-spectrum antibiotic with clinically proved activity against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, spirochetes, rickettsiae, large viruses, and certain protozoa. Indications include respiratory and urinary tracts, skin, ear, eye infections, acne, psittacosis, ornithosis, lymphogranuloma venereum, granuloma inguinale, trachoma, urethritis, pneumonia, chronic bronchitis, relapsing fever, Q fever, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, typhus and the typhus group fever, rickettsialpox, anthrax, Vincent's infection, brucellosis, cholera, tularaemia, spirochaetal infections, gonorrhoea, syphilis, yaws, clostridial wound infection, Legionnaire's disease, Lyme disease, acute intestinal amebiasis (as an adjunct to amebicides). Oxytetracycline is also widely used in veterinary medicine for the therapy of various bacterial infections in cattle, poultry, sheeps, pigs, fish, dogs, bees, and other animals. It works by killing sensitive bacteria and other microbes.
