  • Trazodone (trade names include Desyrel, Trittico, Deprax, Donaren, Novo-Trazodone, Molipaxin, Mylan-Trazodone, Oleptro, PMS-Trazodone, Taxagon, Teva-Trazodone, Thombran, Trazalon, Trazodon Neuraxpharm, Trazolan, Trazodone Pliva, Trittico AC) is an antidepressant and anti-anxiety medication from phenylpiperazine pharmacological group. This medicine is indicated for the treatment of depression, major depressive disorder, unipolar depression (with or without anxiety), generalized anxiety disorder, other anxiety disorders (eg, sleeplessness, chronic insomnia, tension), panic disorder, alcohol dependence, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), control of nightmares or other disturbed sleep, for sedation and sleep aid, for dogs and cats in veterinary medicine. Low-dose trazodone is used off-label for the therapy of insomnia, antidepressant-related insomnia. Other off-label and investigational uses of this drug include complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), also known as reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD); obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), alcohol withdrawal and recovery, schizophrenia as an adjunct to decrease negative symptoms, erectile dysfunction, female sexual dysfunction, sleep apnea, some sleep disturbances, cocaine dependence, frontotemporal dementia, Alzheimer's disease, akathisia, antipsychotic-related extrapyramidal symptoms, bulimia, night eating disorder, adjustment disorder, bruxism in children and adolescents, chronic pain disorders, headache, migraine, fibromyalgia, non-cardiac chest pain, diabetic neuropathy, burning mouth syndrome, functional gastrointestinal disorders for recovery after stroke. As an antidepressant it works through increasing the activity of one of the brain chemicals (serotonin), which helps elevate mood.
