  • Colchicine (trade names include Colcrys, Celogot, Colchicina, Colchigen, Colchis, Colgout, Lengout) is an antigout medication, alkaloid of Colchicum autumnale L., Liliaceae from preparations with no effect on uric acid metabolism pharmacological froup. This medicine is prescribed for the treatment of gout, joint pain and swelling due to attacks of acute gouty arthritis. It works as beta-tubulin interactor: colchicine may affect certain proteins in the body, which may relieve gout symptoms. The drug is indicated to treat Familial Mediterranean fever; as a component of homeopathic medicines; for prevention of atrial fibrillation after cardiac surgery; and in therapy of other diseases and medical conditions, including Behcet's disease, Paget's disease, dermatitis herpetiformis, pseudogout, amyloidosis, calcinosis, scleroderma, pericarditis, vasculitides, spondyloarthropathies, atherosclerosis, chronic coronary disease, pulmonary fibrosis, biliary and hepatic cirrhosis. Colchicine is also has botanical use in plant breeding.
