This medicine is indicated to prevent seizures caused by some forms of epilepsy and to treat various types of seizure disorders such as tonic-clonic seizures, absence seizures, myoclonic seizures, partial and multiple seizures, infantile spasms, status epilepticus. Depakote is also indicated for the treatmnet of manic phase of bipolar disorders (manic-depressive illness), hyperekplexia, cluster-tic syndrome, to prevent migraine headaches, as an add-on for people with schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, for controlling the symptoms of the dopamine dysregulation syndrome. Valproic Acid, its salts and derivatives are also off-label used for sedative purposes, for learning absolute pitch.
