This pharmaceutical drug is commonly used to treat epilepsy, certain types of seizure disorders (including partial seizures, generalized tonic-clonic seizures, mixed seizures). Carbamazepine is also indicated for the therapy of neuropathic pain, occipital neuralgia, trigeminal neuralgia (severe pain in the jaws) and nerve pain, such as diabetic neuropathy, peripheral neuropathy; to relief pain in the throat, tongue and other nerve related pain; borderline personality disorder, cluster-tic syndrome, cyclothymic disorder, dystonia, reflex sympathetic dystrophy syndrome; for adjunctive treatment in schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder; as a second-line agent in bipolar disorder. This medicine is in research studies for the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). It works as a sodium channel blocker.
