Phenytoin (trade names include Dilantin, Di-Hydan, Dilantin Kapseals, Dintoina, Epanutin, Epsolin, Eptoin, Extended Phenytoin Sodium, Fenitoina, Hidantal, Phenytek, Epamin, Phenhydan) is an antiepileptic (anticonvulsant) drug from hydantoin derivatives pharmacological group. This medication is used to control seizures in certain types of epilepsy (including tonic-clonic seizures, focal seizures, absence seizures, seizures during surgery, status epilepticus), for the prevention of seizures following head trauma or neurosurgery, for the treatment of trigeminal neuralgia, neuropathic pain, abnormal heart rhythms, ventricular tachycardia, sudden episodes of atrial tachycardia, arrhythmias caused by cardiac glycoside toxicity, digoxin toxicity. Phenytoin Sodium works by slowing down impulses in the brain that cause seizures.
