  • Here is an additional general information about this medication active ingredient oxcarbazepine:

    Oxcarbazepine information

Oxcarbazepine is a medicine belonging to the antiepileptic class of medications. It is available under the form of 150 mg, 300 mg and 600 mg tablets, containing the active ingredient oxcarbazepine and different inactive ingredients.

    Oxcarbazepine indications

The drug is typically used in the treatment of patients suffering from epilepsy. As monotherapy or in combination with other drugs, it is recommended for adults suffering from partial seizures, while in the case of children of over 4 years of age it is used to treat seizures in monotherapy only. In the case of children of, or over 2 years of age, this drug may only be employed in combination with other medication for the treatment of epilepsy. Oxcarbazepine may have other therapeutic uses as well, which are not covered in this information guide. If you are not sure why you have been prescribed a treatment course with this medicine or if you would like to learn more regarding the possible uses of Oxcarbazepine, it is recommended that you consult a specialized health care professional.

    Oxcarbazepine warnings

You may not take this medication if you are allergic to it or to any of the other ingredients of this pharmaceutical product. Prior to starting a treatment with Oxcarbazepine, you should inform your prescriber of any other medical conditions you are suffering from - in particular you should inform him or her if you are suffering from kidney disorders, hyponatremia or if you have had recent seizures.
This drug may cause dizziness or drowsiness. It is best that you avoid or employ caution in operating machinery or driving. Also, you should avoid or limit alcohol consumption for the duration of the treatment. Oxcarbazepine may be harmful to an unborn baby or to a nursing infant. As such, usage of this medicine during pregnancy or lactation is not recommended.

    Oxcarbazepine intake guidelines

It is strongly recommended that you take Oxcarbazepine exactly as advised by your prescriber. If you have trouble understanding or remembering any of the intake guidelines it is best that you consult your personal health care professional for further explanations.
Take Oxcarbazepine for the full prescribed duration of the therapy. You may not stop taking the medicine without your physician's consent.

    Oxcarbazepine dosage

Your prescriber will determine the appropriate Oxcarbazepine dosage that you need to employ during your therapy. Typically, the treatment starts with initial doses of 600 mg per day, and may be increased over time. Whenever appropriate, the dosage is increased by 300 mg; however the increase may not occur more often than once every three days. The normal maintenance dose that should be attained is of 1200 mg per day. In the case of children, the dosage is determined based on body weight, and should not exceed 600 mg per day.
As the Oxcarbazepine dosage is determined based on several factors which are particular to your case, it is very likely that your dosage will differ from that of other patients'. As such, it is strongly recommended that you only take the medication dosage that has been prescribed to you; do not employ the medication dosage prescribed to another patient, as this may cause the therapy to not yield the expected results.

    Oxcarbazepine overdose

You should never exceed the recommended Oxcarbazepine daily dosage. An overdose with this drug may cause severe long and short term consequences and in severe cases it may prove lethal. As such, if you suspect that you have taken too much of this medicine it is strongly suggested that you contact the local poisons center or go to the nearest medical facility to obtain emergency assistance.

    Oxcarbazepine missed dose

If you accidentally miss a dose of Oxcarbazepine, you should take it as soon as you remember. However if this happens when it is almost time for another intake of the medicine, it is best that you completely skip the missed dose and continue with your regular intake program. Do not double a dose in order to make up for a missed one.
In order to avoid accidentally missing any of your Oxcarbazepine intakes you should check with your personal physician and set up an intake schedule that suits your agenda and life style. Taking the medicine at around the same time every day helps reduce the risk of forgetting about any doses.

    Oxcarbazepine side effects

In rare cases, Oxcarbazepine therapy may cause severe side effects. You should contact your personal physician at once if you experience any signs of an allergic reaction, mood or behavior changes, suicidal tendencies, vision disturbances, involuntary eye movement, speaking or concentration difficulties, coordination loss, abnormal gait, tremor, easy bruising or bleeding, persistent sore throat, chest pain, abdominal pain, dark urine, bloody stool, jaundice.
Apart from these, a number of less severe side effects may occur. These should be brought to the attention of your physicist if they become bothersome or persistent: drowsiness, dizziness, constipation, nausea and vomiting, fatigue, sleeping disorders, mouth dryness, acne.

    Oxcarbazepine drug reactions

Oxcarbazepine may interact with other drugs and medication, such as other seizure control drugs or calcium channel blockers. For a full list of drug interactions, it is best to consult a pharmacist or a specialized physician. Do not start taking this medication before informing your prescriber of any other drugs you are currently taking, and do not start taking any other medication without first consulting with your personal health care specialist.
Oxcarbazepine may interfere with the action of birth control pills. While taking this medicine it is best that you use an additional reliable contraceptive method, such as condoms or a diaphragm.
