Levetiracetam (trade names include Keppra, Epilive, Keppra-XR, Levetiracetam Actavis, Levepsy, Levetiracetam Mylan, Levera, Levesam, Levetiracetam Sandoz, Levipil, Levetiracetam Teva, Levipil-XR, Torleva) is an anticonvulsant, antiepileptic drug. This medication is used in the therapy of epilepsy for epileptic patients as add-on therapy in the treatment of primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures in adults and children 6 years of age and older with idiopathic generalized epilepsy, focal epilepsy, status epilepticus, myoclonic seizures in patients 12 years of age and older with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy, partial-complex epilepsy, partial onset seizures in patients 4 years of age and older, seizures associated with autism spectrum disorder, for prevention of seizures. It is in research studies to treat some neurologic conditions, Tourette syndrome, anxiety disorder, to reduce hyperactivity in the hippocampus in Alzheimer's disease. Levetiracetam works by decreasing abnormal excitement in the brain. Keppra is non-addictive and generally well tolerated medication.
