  • Chlorpromazine (trade names include Thorazine, Largactil, Emetil, Amplictil, Aminazin, Longactil, Plegomazin, Taroctyl, Promactil, Teva-Chlorpromazine) is an antipsychotic medication from phenothiazines with aliphatic side-chain pharmacological group. This medicine is used to treat certain mental, behavioral, psychotic disorders such as anxiety, schizophrenia, acute and chronic psychosis, amphetamine-induced psychosis, psychotic aggression, manic-depressive illness, bipolar disorder, severe behavioral problems in children including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder; to control nausea and vomiting, nervousness and anxiety before surgery, hiccups that will not go away, symptoms of delirium in hospitalized AIDS patients, porphyria episodes, tetanus (in combination with other medications), in veterinary medicine. It is also off-label indicated for the therapy of severe migraine, symptomatic hypertensive emergency, insomnia, severe pruritus, for preanesthesia, to reduce nausea by opioid-treated cancer patients, to intensify and prolong the analgesia of the opioids. Chlorpromazine HCl works as a very effective antagonist of D2 dopamine and similar receptors.
