These medicines are used for the treatment of mental and mood disorders such as bipolar disorder, depression, major depressive disorder, schizophrenia, schizophrenic and schizoaffective disorders, mania and hypomania, manic episodes caused by manic-depressive illness, borderline personality disorder, recurrent bipolar depression, cyclothymic disorder, excessive excitement, intermittent explosive disorder, disorders of impulse control, some psychiatric disorders in children, migraine, cluster headaches, hypnic headache, for suicide prevention, prophylactic treatment of recurrent affective disorders. It works in the central nervous system by interacting with a number of neurotransmitters and receptors, decreasing norepinephrine release and increasing serotonin synthesis.
