This medicine is indicated for the treatment and prevention of viral infection caused by herpes viruses (HSV and VZV): herpes zoster (shingles), first-episode and recurrent genital herpes infection, herpes labialis (cold sores), herpes B, chickenpox, infectious mononucleosis, to prevent cytomegalovirus following a kidney and other organ transplantation, for prophylaxis against herpesviruses in immunocompromised people (such as those undergoing cancer chemotherapy), to reduce HSV transmission from people with recurrent infection to uninfected individuals. Valacyclovir works by disrupting the herpes virus reproduction and its spreading to other cells in the body. It helps to keep the virus inactive.
