Hydrochlorothiazide, also known as HCTZ or HCT (trade names include Microzide, Esidrix, Aquazide, Apo-Hydro, Clorana, Di-Eudrin, Disothiazide, Dithiazide, Diurex, Esidrex, HCT Hexal, HCT-Beta, Hidrosaluretil, Hydrazide, Hypothiazid, Ridaq, Rofucal, Teva-Hydrochlorothiazide) is a diuretic ("water pill", "water tablets") from thiazides pharmacological group. This medication is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension), congestive heart failure, fluid buildup in the body (edema, swelling) caused by certain conditions (eg, liver cirrhosis, heart failure, kidney problems) or medicines (eg, estrogens, corticosteroids). It is also indicated to prevent osteopenia, for the treatment of renal tubular acidosis, diabetes insipidus, osteoporosis, hypercalciuria, nephrocalcinosis, hypoparathyroidism, Dent's disease, Meniere's disease, to decrease the risk of kidney stones in those with high calcium level in the urine; in veterinary medicine. As a thiazide diuretic hydrochlorothiazide works by decreasing the kidneys' ability to retain water, and reducing blood volume. For the therapy of high blood pressure this medicine can be used alone or in combinations with other antihypertensive drugs.
