This medicine is used for the treatment of major depressive disorder, bipolar affective disorder, depressive episodes, recurrent depressive disorder, depression complicated by anxiety or insomnia, generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, hot flashes, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), low appetite, underweight, insomnia and sleep disorders, nausea and vomiting, itching, migraine, headaches, mood disorders, other depression and anxiety related medical conditions.
    It is also in research studies for the therapy of hives, hypopnea, sleep apnea, autistic spectrum conditions, pervasive developmental disorders, antipsychotic-induced akathisia; drug withdrawal, dependence and detoxification; adjunct and other negative, depressive and cognitive symptoms of schizophrenia, to reduce visual hallucinations in a patient with Parkinson's disease psychosis; in veterinary medicine for cats and dogs.
    Mirtazapine works by increasing the activity of certain chemicals in the brain (norepinephrine, serotonin), which help elevate mood.
