This medicine is used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure), severe high blood pressure in pregnancy, hypertensive emergencies, pulmonary hypertension, angina pectoris (chest pain), Prinzmetal angina, heart failure, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, Raynaud's syndrome (Raynaud's phenomenon), painful spasms of the esophagus such as from tetanus or cancer; for migraine prevention; as a high-altitude medicine to treat high altitude pulmonary edema. It is also indicated for early labor as a tocolytic (agent that delays premature labor, also known as preterm birth, premature birth).
    Nifedipine in topical pharmaceutical forms (cream, ointment) is prescribed for the treatment of anal fissures.
    This medicine works by affecting the amount of calcium found in a heart and muscle cells. Nifedipine relaxes blood vessels, which can reduce the amount of work the heart has to do.
